Autumn colours

Why not come out to Okutama and cycle in the vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and yellow leaves. The mountainsides, valleys, and forests burst with color, offering a scenic ride through some of Japan’s most beautiful natural landscapes.

Okutama colours over the years have come through and different times. Sometimes up to a week or two earlier or later depending on how hot the summer was. This year has been especially hot, so we are expecting the colours to be late.
We will show you photos of the trees over the last few years to give you and idea on when the best time is to visit.

Autumn colours start earlier than parks in central Tokyo, since Okutama is slightly cooler.
Generally starting around the start of November, the peak time around the middle.
Also, it depends on the type of tree too. The beech trees change colours earlier than the maple trees.

The weather also has an effect, some years are not so sunny so the maples are not so bright.

Early November

The first part of November has yellows and orange colours, Japanese maple start to change from this week. The outside leaves start to change on the bigger older maple trees.

Mid November

We normally call mid November the peak colour time. There is a good range of colors. The smaller younger maples are usually mostly red. The bigger maples have a good gradiation from red on the outside to green inside.

End of November

The end of November usually still has colour about, mostly just maple trees, depending on the weather many trees may have lost their leaves.

This year seems to be late, so it’s possible for colours to extend into December.
