Cycling Day Trip from Tokyo

Leave the busy city behind and explore the forests, rivers and mountain roads of Okutama by bike. Trekkling is located one minute from Okutama Station, around 75–90 minutes from central Tokyo, making it easy to enjoy a completely different side of Tokyo in a single day.
Okutama lies on the mountainous western edge of Tokyo. Instead of crowded streets and high-rise buildings, you will find forested valleys, clear rivers, waterfalls, historic mountain villages and Lake Okutama.
You do not need a car or your own bicycle. Travel to Okutama by train, collect your bike close to the station and begin your ride from there.
Choose a relaxing e-bike ride, explore independently with one of our cycling maps, or join a guided tour and discover the local culture and quieter roads with an experienced guide.

Choose How You Want to Explore

Rent a Bike and Explore Independently
Choose from e-bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes and hybrids. We will help you select a suitable bike and provide route information before you leave.
An e-bike is the easiest choice for most visitors. Okutama is mountainous, and electric assistance allows you to enjoy the scenery without worrying too much about the hills.

Join a Guided Cycling Tour
Ride with a local guide and discover Okutama’s nature, history and mountain culture. Guided tours are ideal for visitors who would rather not navigate alone or who want to learn more about the area.
Along the way, you can stop at places that are easy to miss when exploring independently, including a mountain spring where you can sample fresh local wasabi and learn about its connection to Okutama’s clean water and cool climate.
Where Can You Cycle?

Trekkling has four suggested routes, each showing a different side of Okutama and the upper Tama River valley.
Okutama Historical Road and Lake
Follow an old mountain road towards Lake Okutama, passing small villages, shrines, a suspension bridge and forest scenery.
Nippara Limestone Cave
Ride deeper into the mountains through the Nippara Valley. This is a hillier route, so an e-bike is strongly recommended.
Unazawa Valley Waterfalls
Explore a quiet forest valley and continue on foot towards a series of waterfalls. This route is especially refreshing during the warmer months.
Ome Healing Byways
Cycle mainly downhill from Okutama towards Ome, following backroads through riverside communities and rural scenery.
Plan Your Visit

Getting to Okutama
From Tokyo or Shinjuku take a JR Chuo Line Rapid or Chuo Special Rapid train with Ome shown as the destination.
These trains continue directly onto the JR Ome Line, so you can remain on the same train through Tachikawa and travel all the way to Ome Station.
At Ome Station, change to a train marked Okutama or Oku-Tama, then remain on the train until the final stop.
When checking the platform display, make sure the destination is Ome. Avoid boarding a train for Tachikawa, Hachioji or Otsuki unless you are comfortable changing trains at Tachikawa.
Weekend and Holiday Trains
On selected weekends and public holidays, JR operates the Holiday Rapid Okutama leaving early from Tokyo and Shinjuku.
Despite its name, the train from central Tokyo currently finishes at Ome. Passengers must change at Ome for the connecting train to Okutama. Check your route on the day of travel, as departure times and connections can change.
Advance booking is recommended, particularly on weekends, public holidays and during the spring and autumn seasons. Booking online comes with a 500 yen discount.
What to Wear
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for cycling. Avoid long skirts, wide trousers, high heels and open sandals.
What to Bring
Bring identification, water, weather-appropriate clothing and a backpack. Most bikes do not have a basket, and mountain weather can change quickly.
